  • Troops Involved: Continental Army, British Army

Battle Description

The Battle of Harlem Heights was a morale-restoring engagement for the Continental Army following its defeat at Long Island and retreat from New York City. On September 16, 1776, British light infantry advanced into northern Manhattan, probing American positions near Harlem Heights.

General George Washington ordered a counterattack using a flanking maneuver that pushed the British back. The fighting lasted several hours across wooded terrain and open fields. Though not a large-scale battle, it marked the first time Washington’s army successfully repelled British forces in open combat.

Outcome

  • Outcome: American tactical victory; British forces withdrew.
  • Casualties:
    • American: ~30 killed or wounded
    • British: ~90 killed or wounded

Significance on the Revolution

Harlem Heights helped restore confidence in the Continental Army after its earlier setbacks. It demonstrated improved coordination and leadership under Washington and showed that American forces could hold their own in conventional engagements. The battle also delayed further British advances into upper Manhattan and gave the Patriots time to regroup.
