The American Crisis No. IV

The American Crisis by Thomas Paine
Published September 12, 1777

Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it. The event of the present campaign is yet undecided, and the spirit of the people must not be allowed to falter. The enemy is formidable, but not invincible. Their strength lies in our disunity, and their hope is in our despair.

Let it be remembered that the cause we fight for is just, and that the principles of liberty are eternal. The struggle may be long, and the sacrifices great, but the reward is beyond measure. The independence of America is not a dream, but a destiny. It is the birthright of every citizen, and the foundation of a new world.

The present crisis calls for courage, for perseverance, and for faith. Let every man do his duty, and let no one shrink from the task. The future is ours to shape, and the legacy we leave will be the inheritance of generations.
