Arthur Middleton

MIDDLETON, Arthur, signer of the Declaration of Independence, born at Middleton Place, near Charleston, S.C., 26 June, 1742; died there, 1 January, 1787.

He was educated in England at Hackney, Westminster, and Cambridge, and studied law at the Middle Temple. Middleton returned to South Carolina and became active in revolutionary politics. He was elected to the Continental Congress in 1776 and signed the Declaration of Independence.

During the war, he was captured by the British and imprisoned in St. Augustine, Florida, until exchanged. After his release, he resumed public service in South Carolina and supported the patriot cause.

Middleton was known for his refinement, patriotism, and cultural interests. His estate, Middleton Place, remains a historic landmark.
