Charles Cotesworth Pinckney

PINCKNEY, Charles Cotesworth, soldier, diplomat, and statesman, born in Charleston, S.C., 25 February, 1746; died there, 16 August, 1825.

He was educated in England and studied law at Oxford and the Middle Temple. Returning to South Carolina, he became active in colonial politics and served in the Revolutionary War, rising to the rank of brigadier-general.

Pinckney was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and signed the Constitution. He later served as U.S. Minister to France and was involved in the XYZ Affair, famously declaring, “No! No! Not a sixpence!”

He ran unsuccessfully for vice president and president as a Federalist. Pinckney was known for his integrity, patriotism, and commitment to the federal union.
