Charles Thomson

THOMSON, Charles, patriot and secretary of the Continental Congress, born in Ireland, 29 November, 1729; died in Lower Merion, Pa., 16 August, 1824.

He emigrated to America as a child and was educated in Pennsylvania. Thomson became a teacher and scholar, and was active in colonial resistance to British rule.

He served as secretary of the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1789, recording its proceedings with precision and integrity. Though not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Thomson was present for its adoption and played a key role in its documentation.

After retiring, he translated the Septuagint and wrote a history of the Revolution, which he never published. Thomson was known for his honesty, intellect, and quiet influence on the founding generation.
