BREARLEY, David, jurist, born in New Jersey in 1745; died in Trenton, N.J., 16 Aug., 1790.

He was graduated at Princeton in 1764, studied law, and began practice in his native state. He was an ardent patriot, and took an active part in the Revolutionary movement. He was appointed chief justice of New Jersey in 1779, and held that office until 1789.

He was a delegate to the convention that framed the Federal Constitution, and signed that instrument. In 1789 President George Washington appointed him judge of the U.S. district court for New Jersey, which office he held until his death.
