Elizabeth Fergusson

FERGUSSON, Elizabeth, poet and patriot, born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1731; died in 1801.

She was the daughter of Dr. Thomas Graeme and was educated in England. On her return she became known for her literary talents and hosted a salon at her estate, “Graeme Park,” which became a center of intellectual and political discussion during the Revolutionary era.

Though her husband, Henry Hugh Fergusson, was a loyalist, Elizabeth herself sympathized with the patriot cause. She is remembered for her efforts to mediate between opposing sides and for her writings, which included poetry and essays.

Her life reflected the complexities faced by women during the Revolution, balancing personal loyalties with public convictions.
