George Read
READ, George, signer of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, born in Cecil County, Md., 18 September, 1733; died in New Castle, Del., 21 September, 1798.
He studied law and became attorney-general of Delaware. Read was elected to the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence, though he initially opposed separation from Britain.
He helped draft the Articles of Confederation and later signed the Constitution in 1787. Read served as U.S. Senator and Chief Justice of Delaware.
Known for his moderation and legal skill, Read played a key role in shaping both state and national governance during the founding era.
