George Wythe

WYTHE, George, signer of the Declaration of Independence, born in Elizabeth City County, Va., in 1726; died in Richmond, Va., 8 June, 1806.

He studied law and became one of Virginia’s most respected legal minds. Wythe was elected to the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

He served as Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates and later as a judge on the state’s high court of chancery. Wythe was also a mentor to Thomas Jefferson and helped shape legal education in America, becoming the first professor of law at the College of William and Mary.

Renowned for his integrity and scholarship, Wythe’s influence extended through generations of American jurists and statesmen.
