Gunning Bedford Jr

BEDFORD, Gunning, Jr., statesman, born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1747; died in Wilmington, Del., 30 March, 1812.

He was graduated at Princeton in 1771, studied law, and began practice in Delaware. During the Revolution he served as aide to Gen. George Washington, and afterward as deputy muster-master-general.

He was a member of the Continental Congress from 1783 till 1785, and of the convention that framed the Federal Constitution, which he signed. He was appointed judge of the U.S. district court for Delaware in 1789, and held that office until his death.

Bedford was a strong advocate of federal union and played an active role in shaping the judiciary of the new republic. He was noted for his legal acumen and public spirit.
