Hannah Arnett

ARNETT, Hannah, patriot, born in New Jersey about 1733; died there about 1823.

During the Revolution, while her husband and other men of Elizabethtown were assembled to consider the question of accepting British protection, she entered the room and denounced them as cowards and traitors. Her passionate appeal shamed the men into rejecting the British offer and reaffirming their loyalty to the American cause.

Her act was widely celebrated as an example of female patriotism and moral courage. Though not officially recognized as a political figure, her influence helped sustain revolutionary sentiment in New Jersey during a critical moment.

She lived to see the independence she had so fiercely defended become a reality.
