Jared Ingersoll

INGERSOLL, Jared, jurist and patriot, born in New Haven, Conn., 24 October, 1749; died in Philadelphia, Pa., 31 October, 1822.

He studied law in Philadelphia and London, and returned to America with strong republican convictions. Ingersoll became a prominent lawyer and was elected to the Continental Congress in 1780. He later served as attorney-general of Pennsylvania and was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787.

Though not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, he was a signer of the U.S. Constitution and played a key role in shaping the legal framework of the new nation.

Ingersoll was also the Federalist candidate for vice president in 1812. He remained active in legal and civic affairs until his death.
