John Blair

BLAIR, John, jurist, born in Williamsburg, Va., in 1732; died there, 31 Aug., 1800.

He was educated at William and Mary College, studied law in England, and returned to Virginia, where he soon attained high rank in his profession. He was a member of the colonial legislature, and in 1776 was chosen to the committee that framed the constitution of Virginia.

He was appointed judge of the general court, and in 1780 became a member of the court of appeals. He was a delegate to the convention that framed the Federal Constitution, and signed that instrument.

In 1789 President George Washington appointed him associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, which office he held until 1796. Blair was distinguished for his legal learning, integrity, and devotion to public duty.
