Joseph Hewes
HEWES, Joseph, signer of the Declaration of Independence, born in Kingston, N.J., 1730; died in Philadelphia, Pa., 10 November, 1779.
He was educated at Princeton and became a successful merchant in Edenton, North Carolina. Hewes was elected to the Provincial Assembly and later to the Continental Congress, where he served from 1774 to 1779.
He signed the Declaration of Independence and was a key figure in organizing naval affairs for the revolutionary government. Hewes is considered one of the founders of the American Navy, having helped appoint officers and procure ships.
He died while still in office, and Congress adjourned for his funeral—a rare honor. Hewes was known for his integrity, diligence, and quiet but essential contributions to American independence.
