Nathaniel Gorham

GORHAM, Nathaniel, statesman, born in Charlestown, Mass., 27 May, 1738; died there, 11 June, 1796.

He was engaged in mercantile pursuits and became active in public affairs. He was a member of the Massachusetts legislature and of the provincial congress, and served on the board of war during the Revolution.

He was a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1782 to 1783 and again from 1785 to 1787, serving as its president in 1786. He was also a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and signed the Federal Constitution.

Gorham was respected for his practical judgment and administrative ability. He played a key role in shaping the framework of the new government and remained active in Massachusetts politics until his death.
