Oliver Wolcott

WOLCOTT, Oliver, signer of the Declaration of Independence, born in Windsor, Conn., 26 November, 1726; died in Litchfield, Conn., 1 December, 1797.

He graduated from Yale in 1747 and served as a militia officer during the French and Indian War. Wolcott later became sheriff of Litchfield County and a member of the colonial and state legislatures.

Elected to the Continental Congress, he signed the Declaration of Independence and served on military and diplomatic committees. During the Revolutionary War, he commanded Connecticut militia forces and participated in the defense of New York.

Wolcott was later elected Governor of Connecticut, serving from 1796 until his death. His life reflected steady leadership and commitment to both state and national causes.
