Roger Sherman

SHERMAN, Roger, signer of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, born in Newton, Mass., 19 April, 1721; died in New Haven, Conn., 23 July, 1793.

He was self-educated and began his career as a shoemaker and surveyor before studying law. Sherman moved to Connecticut and became a prominent public servant, serving in the legislature, Continental Congress, and Constitutional Convention.

He signed the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution—the only person to sign all three founding documents.

Sherman proposed the “Connecticut Compromise,” which shaped the structure of Congress. He was known for his wisdom, integrity, and deep religious faith.
