Thomas Mifflin

MIFFLIN, Thomas, soldier and statesman, born in Philadelphia, Pa., 10 January, 1744; died there, 20 January, 1800.

He graduated from the College of Philadelphia in 1760 and entered mercantile life. Mifflin joined the Continental Army and served as aide-de-camp to George Washington. He was appointed Quartermaster-General and later became a major-general.

He was a delegate to the Continental Congress and signed the Constitution. Mifflin served as President of Congress, Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly, and Governor of Pennsylvania.

His career was marked by both military service and political leadership. Though criticized for his management of army supplies, he remained influential in shaping Pennsylvania’s government and supporting the federal union.
