William Whipple

WHIPPLE, William, signer of the Declaration of Independence, born in Kittery, Maine, 14 January, 1730; died in Portsmouth, N.H., 28 November, 1785.

He became a successful merchant in Portsmouth and was elected to the Continental Congress, where he signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Whipple served as a brigadier-general in the New Hampshire militia during the Revolutionary War, participating in the Saratoga campaign. He later became a judge of the superior court of New Hampshire.

Known for his integrity and patriotism, Whipple freed his enslaved servant during the war, believing that fighting for liberty required personal consistency.
