William Whipple

Early Life and Maritime Career

William Whipple was born on January 14, 1730, in Kittery, Maine. He pursued a career as a merchant and sea captain, gaining wealth and experience through transatlantic trade. His practical knowledge of commerce and navigation later informed his political service.

Revolutionary Commitment

Whipple settled in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and became active in colonial resistance. He was elected to the Continental Congress in 1776 and signed the Declaration of Independence. His signature reflected a deep commitment to liberty and the emerging American republic.

Military Service

During the Revolutionary War, Whipple served as a brigadier general in the New Hampshire militia. He participated in the Saratoga campaign and helped secure the surrender of British General Burgoyne. His leadership in both civil and military spheres demonstrated his versatility and patriotism.

Postwar Civic Engagement

After the war, Whipple served as a judge and state legislator. He advocated for economic development and legal reform in New Hampshire. He also freed his enslaved servant, reflecting a growing personal conviction against slavery.

Legacy

William Whipple died on November 28, 1785. Though less widely known than other Founders, his contributions to independence, military success, and civic life in New Hampshire affirm his place in the story of American nationhood.
