Carter Braxton

Carter Braxton was born in Newington, King and Queen County, Virginia, September 10, 1736. He was educated at the College of William and Mary, and inherited a large estate. He early engaged in public affairs, and was a member of the House of Burgesses.

He was a zealous patriot, and took an active part in the measures of resistance to British oppression. In 1776 he was elected a delegate to the Continental Congress, and was present at the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, to which he affixed his signature.

He continued in Congress until 1777, and was afterward engaged in public service in Virginia. He was a member of the State Legislature, and held various offices of trust. He suffered severe pecuniary losses during the war, but maintained his integrity and patriotism.

He died October 10, 1797, in the sixty-second year of his age.
