George Read
George Read was born in Cecil County, Maryland, September 18, 1733. He was educated in Pennsylvania, studied law, and commenced practice in New Castle, Delaware. He soon became distinguished for his talents and integrity.
He was a member of the Colonial Assembly, and took an active part in the measures of resistance to British oppression. In 1776 he was elected a delegate to the Continental Congress, and was present at the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, to which he affixed his signature.
He continued in Congress until 1779, and was afterward engaged in public service in Delaware. He was a member of the Convention which framed the Federal Constitution, and was elected a Senator in Congress. He was also Chief Justice of Delaware.
He died September 21, 1798, in the sixty-sixth year of his age.
