Lewis Morris

Lewis Morris was born at Morrisania, New York, in 1726. He graduated at Yale College in 1746, and inherited a large estate, which he managed with great ability. He early took an active part in public affairs, and was a member of the Provincial Legislature of New York.

He was a zealous patriot, and firmly opposed the encroachments of the British government. In 1775 he was elected a delegate to the Continental Congress, and continued in that body until 1777. He was present at the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, and affixed his signature to that instrument.

During the war, his estate was ravaged by the British, and his family was compelled to flee for safety. He bore these losses with fortitude, and continued to serve his country with zeal and fidelity. He was afterward a member of the State Senate, and held other important offices.

He died January 22, 1798, in the seventy-second year of his age.
