Philip Livingston

Philip Livingston was born in Albany, New York, January 15, 1716. He graduated at Yale College in 1737, and engaged in mercantile pursuits in New York City. He soon became wealthy and influential, and took an active part in public affairs.

He was a member of the Colonial Assembly, and was a delegate to the Colonial Congress at Albany in 1754. He was also a member of the Committee of Safety, and in 1776 was elected a delegate to the Continental Congress. He was present at the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, and affixed his signature to that instrument.

He continued in Congress until 1778, and was afterward elected to the State Senate of New York. He was a man of strong intellect and sound judgment, and was highly esteemed for his public and private virtues.

He died suddenly while attending Congress at York, Pennsylvania, June 12, 1778, in the sixty-third year of his age.
