Richard Stockton

Richard Stockton was born near Princeton, New Jersey, October 1, 1730. He graduated at Princeton College in 1748, studied law, and entered upon its practice in his native State. He soon became eminent in his profession, and was distinguished for his learning and eloquence.

He visited England in 1766, and was received with marked attention by many of the most eminent men of the kingdom. On his return, he was appointed a member of the Royal Council of New Jersey, and was also a judge of the Supreme Court.

In 1776 he was elected a delegate to the Continental Congress, and was present at the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, to which he affixed his signature. Soon afterward he was taken prisoner by the British, and suffered great hardships during his confinement. His health was seriously impaired, and he never fully recovered from the effects of his imprisonment.

He died February 28, 1781, in the fifty-first year of his age.
