Thomas Stone

Thomas Stone was born in Charles County, Maryland, in 1743. He received a liberal education, studied law, and commenced practice in Frederick County. He soon became distinguished for his talents and integrity.

He was a member of the Maryland Convention, and took an active part in the measures of resistance to British oppression. In 1776 he was elected a delegate to the Continental Congress, and was present at the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, to which he affixed his signature.

He continued in Congress until 1778, and was afterward engaged in public service in Maryland. He was appointed to the United States Senate, but declined the honor on account of domestic affliction. He was a man of great worth and purity of character.

He died October 5, 1787, in the forty-fourth year of his age.
