William Hooper

William Hooper was born in Boston, Massachusetts, June 28, 1742. He graduated from Harvard College, studied law, and moved to North Carolina, where he gained distinction in his profession and entered public life.

He was elected to the Colonial Assembly and became a leading advocate for American rights. In 1774 he was chosen as a delegate to the Continental Congress, and in 1776 he was present at the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, to which he affixed his signature.

He continued in Congress until 1777, and afterward served in the State Legislature of North Carolina. His property suffered during the war, and his health declined in later years, but he remained devoted to the cause of liberty.

He died October 14, 1790, in Hillsborough, North Carolina, in the forty-ninth year of his age.
