William Paca

William Paca was born in Harford County, Maryland, October 31, 1740. He was educated at Philadelphia and studied law in London. On his return, he commenced practice in Annapolis, and soon became distinguished for his talents and patriotism.

He was a member of the Maryland Legislature, and took an active part in the measures of resistance to British oppression. In 1776 he was elected a delegate to the Continental Congress, and was present at the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, to which he affixed his signature.

He continued in Congress until 1778, and was afterward engaged in public service in Maryland. He was appointed Chief Justice of the State, and in 1782 was elected Governor. He was also a judge of the United States District Court.

He died October 23, 1799, in the fifty-ninth year of his age.
