Arthur Middleton
Arthur Middleton was born in South Carolina, in the year 1742. He was educated in England, and studied law. He returned to America, and entered upon the practice of his profession in his native State.
He was elected a member of the Provincial Congress of South Carolina, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government. He was chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.
He returned to South Carolina, and was appointed a member of the Legislature. He was taken prisoner by the British during their invasion of the State, and was sent to St. Augustine, Florida. He was afterward exchanged, and resumed his public duties.
He continued in public life until his death, which occurred in the year 1787.
