Button Gwinnett

Button Gwinnett was born in England, in the year 1732. He came to America at an early age, and settled in Georgia. He engaged in mercantile pursuits, and soon became a man of influence.

He was elected a member of the Provincial Congress of Georgia, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government. He was chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.

He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1777. He was afterward elected Governor of Georgia, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability.

He died in the year 1777.
