Charles Carroll

Charles Carroll was born in Annapolis, Maryland, on the 20th of September, 1737. He was descended from a distinguished Irish family, and was educated in France and England. He studied law in London, and returned to America in 1765.

He was possessed of great wealth, and took an active part in the resistance to the measures of the British government. He was elected a member of the Maryland Convention, and was afterward chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress.

He signed the Declaration of Independence, and was the only Roman Catholic among the signers. He rendered important services to the cause of liberty, and was one of the most influential men in Maryland.

He was elected to the Maryland Senate, and afterward to the United States Senate. He retired from public life in 1800, and spent the remainder of his days at his estate near Baltimore.

He died on the 14th of November, 1832, in the ninety-sixth year of his age. He was the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence.
