Elbridge Gerry

Elbridge Gerry was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts, on the 17th of July, 1744. He was educated at Harvard College, and studied law. He entered upon the practice of his profession, and soon acquired a high reputation.

He was elected a member of the Massachusetts Legislature, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government. He was chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.

He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1785. He was afterward elected Governor of Massachusetts, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability.

He was elected Vice-President of the United States in 1812, and died in office on the 23d of November, 1814.
