George Clymer

George Clymer was born in Pennsylvania, in the year 1739. He was left an orphan at an early age, and was placed under the care of his uncle, who gave him a good education. He engaged in mercantile pursuits, and became one of the most influential men in Philadelphia.

He took an active part in the resistance to the measures of the British government, and was one of the earliest advocates of independence. He was elected a member of the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.

He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1777. He was afterward elected to the Pennsylvania Legislature, and took an active part in the affairs of the State.

He was appointed one of the commissioners to negotiate a treaty with the Cherokee Indians, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability. He was elected a member of the convention which framed the Constitution of the United States, and took an active part in its deliberations.

He died in the year 1813.
