George Read
George Read was born in Maryland, in the year 1733. He was educated at a seminary in Pennsylvania, and studied law. He removed to Delaware, and entered upon the practice of his profession.
He was elected a member of the Legislature of Delaware, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government. He was chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.
He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1779. He was appointed Chief Justice of Delaware, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability.
He was a member of the convention which framed the Constitution of the United States, and took an active part in its deliberations. He died in the year 1798.
