George Walton
George Walton was born in Virginia, in the year 1740. He removed to Georgia, and entered upon the practice of law. He soon acquired a high reputation, and became one of the leading men of the State.
He was elected a member of the Provincial Congress of Georgia, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government. He was chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.
He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1778. He was afterward elected Governor of Georgia, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability.
He died in the year 1804.
