James Smith

James Smith was born in Ireland, in the year 1719. He came to America at an early age, and settled in Pennsylvania. He was educated at Princeton College, and studied law. He entered upon the practice of his profession, and soon acquired a high reputation.

He was elected a member of the Legislature of Pennsylvania, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government. He was chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.

He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1778. He was afterward elected a member of the Legislature of Pennsylvania, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability.

He died in the year 1806.
