James Wilson

James Wilson was born in Scotland, in the year 1742. He was educated at the University of St. Andrews, and came to America in 1766. He settled in Pennsylvania, and studied law. He soon acquired a high reputation as a lawyer, and took an active part in public affairs.

He was elected a member of the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence. He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and was one of the ablest members of the Congress.

He was appointed a member of the convention which framed the Constitution of the United States, and took an active part in its deliberations. He was afterward appointed one of the judges of the Supreme Court of the United States, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability.

He died in North Carolina, while on a visit to that State, in the year 1798.
