Joseph Hewes

Joseph Hewes was born in New Jersey, in the year 1730. He was educated at Princeton College, and engaged in mercantile pursuits. He removed to North Carolina, and became one of the most influential men in that State.

He took an active part in the resistance to the measures of the British government, and was elected a member of the Continental Congress. He signed the Declaration of Independence, and rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure.

He was appointed Secretary of the Naval Committee, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability. He continued in Congress until his death, which occurred in the year 1779.
