Matthew Thornton
Matthew Thornton was born in Ireland, in the year 1714. He came to America at an early age, and settled in New Hampshire. He studied medicine, and entered upon the practice of his profession. He soon acquired a high reputation, and became one of the leading men of the State.
He was elected a member of the Legislature of New Hampshire, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government. He was chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.
He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1778. He was afterward elected a member of the Legislature of New Hampshire, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability.
He died in the year 1803.
