Oliver Wolcott

Oliver Wolcott was born in Connecticut, in the year 1726. He was educated at Yale College, and studied law. He entered upon the practice of his profession, and soon acquired a high reputation.

He was elected a member of the Legislature of Connecticut, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government. He was chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.

He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1783. He was appointed Governor of Connecticut, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability.

He died in the year 1797.
