Richard Henry Lee

Richard Henry Lee was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, on the 20th of January, 1732. He was educated in England, and returned to America in 1750. He was elected to the Virginia Legislature, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government.

He was a member of the Continental Congress, and on the 7th of June, 1776, offered the resolution declaring the colonies free and independent States. He signed the Declaration of Independence, and rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure.

He continued in Congress until 1780, and was afterward elected to the Virginia Legislature. He was chosen President of Congress in 1784, and was a member of the convention which framed the Constitution of the United States.

He was elected a member of the United States Senate, and served until 1792, when he retired to private life. He died on the 19th of June, 1794.
