Samuel Chase

Samuel Chase was born in Maryland, in the year 1741. He was educated at a seminary in Baltimore, and studied law. He entered upon the practice of his profession, and soon acquired a high reputation.

He was elected a member of the Legislature of Maryland, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government. He was chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.

He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1778. He was appointed Chief Justice of the State, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability.

He was afterward appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of the United States, and held that position until his death, which occurred in the year 1811.
