Stephen Hopkins

Stephen Hopkins was born in Rhode Island, in the year 1707. He was educated at home, and engaged in mercantile pursuits. He became a man of wealth and influence, and took an active part in public affairs.

He was elected a member of the Legislature of Rhode Island, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government. He was chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.

He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1778. He was afterward elected a member of the Legislature of Rhode Island, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability.

He died in the year 1785.
