Thomas McKean

Thomas McKean was born in Pennsylvania, in the year 1734. He was educated at a seminary in New Castle, Delaware, and studied law. He entered upon the practice of his profession, and soon acquired a high reputation.

He was elected a member of the Legislature of Delaware, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government. He was chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.

He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1783. He was appointed Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability.

He was elected Governor of Pennsylvania, and served until 1812. He died in the year 1817.
