Thomas Nelson Jr.

Thomas Nelson Jr. was born in Yorktown, Virginia, in the year 1738. He was educated in England, and returned to America in 1761. He was elected a member of the Virginia Legislature, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government.

He was chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence. He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1777.

He was appointed Governor of Virginia, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability. He took an active part in the military operations of the State, and rendered important services in the field.

He retired to private life at the close of the war, and died in the year 1789.
