William Paca

William Paca was born in Maryland, in the year 1740. He was educated at Philadelphia, and studied law. He entered upon the practice of his profession, and soon acquired a high reputation.

He was elected a member of the Legislature of Maryland, and took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government. He was chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence.

He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1778. He was appointed Chief Justice of Maryland, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability.

He was afterward elected Governor of Maryland, and served until 1782. He died in the year 1799.
