William Whipple

William Whipple was born in Kittery, Maine, in the year 1730. He was educated in the common schools of his native town, and entered upon a seafaring life. He became a successful merchant, and settled in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

He took an active part in the resistance to the measures of the British government, and was elected a member of the Continental Congress. He signed the Declaration of Independence, and rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure.

He was appointed a brigadier-general in the militia of New Hampshire, and took part in the military operations of the State. He was afterward appointed a judge of the Superior Court of New Hampshire, and discharged the duties of that office with great ability.

He died in the year 1785.
