William Williams

William Williams was born in Lebanon, Connecticut, on the 18th of April, 1731. He was educated at Harvard College, and studied theology. He afterward engaged in mercantile pursuits, and became one of the most influential men in his native State.

He was elected to the Connecticut Legislature, and was a member of that body for many years. He took an active part in the measures adopted to resist the encroachments of the British government, and was one of the most zealous patriots of the Revolution.

He was elected a member of the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence. He rendered important services in securing the adoption of that measure, and continued in Congress until 1781.

He was afterward elected to the Connecticut Legislature, and served until his death. He died on the 2d of August, 1811, in the eighty-first year of his age.
