Resolution for Independence (1776)
Introduction
Proposed by Richard Henry Lee and adopted on July 2, 1776, the Resolution for Independence declared that the thirteen American colonies were free and independent states, severing all political ties with Great Britain. It laid the legal foundation for the Declaration of Independence, approved two days later.
