Summary

The Preamble of the United States Constitution stands not as law itself, but as purpose — a statement of intent from a nation still wet with the ink of revolution.
In a few carefully balanced words, the Framers distilled the philosophy of self-government: that power flows not from monarchs or parliaments, but from We the People.

It defines why the Constitution exists — to forge unity, establish justice, maintain peace, defend the nation, promote the common good, and preserve liberty for generations yet unborn.
It is, in essence, the mission statement of a republic built on reason and consent.


Text of the Preamble

We the People of the United States,
in Order to form a more perfect Union,
establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility,
provide for the common defence,
promote the general Welfare,
and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,
do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
